In this Advanced Level video, six advanced Graham dancers demonstrate and perform Advanced Graham exercises many of which date from the 1930s, 1940s through to the 1960s. These exercises are physically and artistically challenging. Miki Orihara, the dance director, along with Susan Kikuchi, compiled the syllabus of these exercises based on their long careers with the Graham Company. In addition to the Floor and Standing exercises, Miki collected combinations contributed by renowned Graham teachers that combine and challenge the dancers with the exercises from the video.

In this Intermediate/Advanced Level video, the fundamental principles in the Graham Technique, contraction and release, opposition, shift of weight, and spirals, that were introduced in the Beginning Level are further developed. Select exercises are demonstrated completely through Advanced progressions. Traditional combinations teach dancers how to combine exercises they’ve learned into fluid short dances, merging technical prowess with lyrical expressiveness. A final section provides in-depth instruction on the more complicated exercises with slow motion and freeze frames. Interviews with Graham dancers included as bonus features with streaming and DVDs.

*This is the follow-up to our Graham Technique - Beginning Level video!
The fundamental principles in the Graham Technique, contraction and release, opposition, shift of weight and spirals, that were introduced in the Beginning Level are further developed in this Intermediate Level. The development of some exercises is demonstrated completely through Advanced progressions. The exercises are divided, as in a typical Graham class, into sections: Floor Work, Standing, and Across the Floor.
Martha Graham (1892-1991) created this dance technique that, along with her groundbreaking choreography, helped spark the revolution knows as modern dance. Her unique dance vocabulary evolved over the years to meet her changing choreographic needs.

Miki Orihara with Susan Kikuchi, were the Dance Directors for this next section of the Martha Graham Legacy Project.

This Martha Graham Technique Video is a unique, comprehensive documentation of the exercises that make up the Graham Beginning Level.  The video introduces you to the important elements of Graham technique: the contraction, release and spiral, driven by the torso and pelvis with the use of the breath and the floor. As in the typical Graham class, the exercises are divided into 3 sections: Floor Work, Standing and Across the Floor. The technique is excellent performance training - physically sound and emotionally expressive. The technique in the video was directed by Miki Orihara, a principal dancer with the Graham Company for over 27 years, and the Associate Dance Director, Susan Kikuchi, a former member of the Graham Company and Director of the Graham Ensemble and School. The running time for the exercises is about 1 hour. Plus, there are two very enlightening sections of edited interviews of former Graham dancers giving the Essentials of the Graham Technique and their perspective on Teaching Graham.
